Dear Kin and Friends,

Becky had no sooner driven off for work this morning than, walking back into the house, I heard the phone ring and picked it up to hear Henry’s voice! Alpha Company has 1 sat. phone circling among its many members, and so it appears that we are going to hear from Henry whenever the phone comes around to him, which, on its latest orbit, happened at 8:30 this morning, 5:00 PM his time. Actually, Henry and I talked 4 times this morning, being disconnected thrice (sorry, but it’s a perfect place to use that old word). Henry, who is now sat.-phone-wise, called back immediately each time we were disconnected, making sure he used all of his allotted 10-minutes of talk time, and then a couple more! Read more…

Dear Kin and Friends:

In his answering-message left a week ago, Henry said that though everything had calmed down in Marjah, “that doesn’t mean it’s over.” And it’s not. According to an article Sunday from McClatchy Washington Bureau, the Taliban in and around Marjah have spent the last two weeks regrouping and changing tactics, after finding themselves unable to confront us directly.
